'T(r)anzkultur: Choreographing Diaspora in a Transcultural Landscape' Summer School (July 24-27, 2024, Düssledorf, Germany) focuses on exploring the diverse interconnections and contact zones of dance and transculturality through dance performances, practical workshops, and film screenings. At the T(r)anzkultur 2024, we will explore how the Asian diaspora identity and experience are being represented and articulated through dances, and delve into the processes and dynamics that emerge and become visible when urban dance and transculturality intersect. 

During this four day Summer School, we invite choreographers, dancers, filmmakers and scholars to examine new approaches and challenges in the field of dance studies and Asian diaspora studies. We will provide participants with innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to understanding movement, cultural diversity, and artistic expression. In addition to the dance workshops and video workshops for registered participants, there will be a roundtable discussion with local experts, and panel presentations and discussions on critical issues regarding diaspora and dance. 

We invite papers from a wide array of disciplines, including Asian Studies, Diaspora Studies, Dance Studies, Film and Media Studies, and Theatre Studies. We welcome all topics but are particularly interested in work exploring migration and movement, trauma and memory, as well as digital technology in dance and video art culture. Scholars and students at different phases are welcome to apply, early career scholars and graduate students are highly encouraged to apply. After Summer School concludes, we plan to publish a selected number of presented papers in our open-access journal.

This Summer School is organized by the Transcultural Studies Program at the Heinrich Heine University Düsseeldorf. Collaborating partners include tanzhaus nrw, Filmsammlung Deutsches Tanzarchiv Köln,  Moovy Festival, and Sammlung Philara. No tuition or fees are required for participation. The presenters and participants are responsible for their accommodation and travel costs.
